💠 Exercise guide

✅ The weighted round arm with a barbell is a controlled exercise targeting the anterior and lateral deltoid heads. In addition to increasing shoulder strength, it improves neuromuscular coordination and shoulder girdle stability. This exercise is highly effective for specialized shoulder warm-ups, pre-activation, and muscle building with light weights.

💠 Execution Guide

Weighted Round Arm

Setup

✅ Stand upright, chest up, shoulders back, and core engaged.
✅ Hold a light barbell plate (2.5–5 kg) with both hands in front of your body.
✅ Keep your arms slightly bent at the elbows (do not lock).
✅ Maintain steady and controlled breathing.

Execution method

✅ Move your arms in a large, controlled circular path.
✅ Keep the barbell plate at shoulder level and control the circle completely.
✅ Do not allow your lower back or hips to move excessively.
✅ At the end of the circle, smoothly transition into the next circle without pausing.

Coaching tips and recommendations

✔️ Do not make the circular range too large; keep it within joint control.
✔️ Do not shrug your shoulders; keep them relaxed.
✔️ Do not fully straighten your elbows.
✔️ Keep your shoulder blades stable; avoid excessive chest retraction.
✔️ Perform the movement slowly with a steady rhythm.

Benefits of the exercise

1️⃣ Strengthens the anterior deltoid head
2️⃣ Increases shoulder muscle endurance
3️⃣ Improves shoulder joint stability through various ranges
4️⃣ Enhances neuromuscular coordination in the shoulder girdle
5️⃣ Excellent pre-activation before pressing exercises (Bench Press, Shoulder Press)
6️⃣ Suitable for specialized shoulder warm-ups
7️⃣ Improves mind–muscle connection
8️⃣ Balances activation among anterior, lateral deltoid heads and teres major
9️⃣ Puts less strain on joints compared to overhead movements
🔟 Ideal for active recovery and increasing blood flow

💠 Muscles engaged in the movement

The Weighted Round Arm exercise primarily targets the shoulder muscles and, by creating a circular path, activates all deltoid heads to varying degrees. Additionally, the forearms, chest, and core muscles are engaged to control and stabilize the movement.

Anterior Deltoid muscle

Anterior Deltoid Muscle

🔹 The anterior deltoid is one of the three parts of the deltoid muscle. Its primary functions are moving the arm forward (flexion), internal rotation, and assisting in horizontal shoulder movements. This muscle plays a key role in many upper-body exercises, especially strength training movements like bench press, front raises, and throwing actions.

🔹 The anterior deltoid is one of the most important muscles involved in pressing and pushing movements. Due to its engagement in many strength exercises, it is often well-developed among athletes and bodybuilders. However, overusing this muscle without strengthening the posterior shoulder muscles (posterior deltoid and rotator cuff) can lead to muscular imbalances and increase the risk of shoulder injuries.
